Mental diseases and our faith.
I’d like to face an extremely delicate matter closely connected with our Christian faith. I’m really interested in the attitude of many true Christians to such a phenomenon as mental diseases. There’s a definite problem to permit people with mental diseases to remain or become true Christians. As for me I consider this question to be extremely unpleasant for me, though my mental aptitudes are rather normal. But at the same time I feel like I’ve just seen a beggar among luxurious things. I think you can understand what I feel. So people tend to recognize the fact of the existence of this problem but at the same time they often discriminate people with mental diseases as if they look at such unpleasant creatures as snakes.

So to cut along story short a question has appeared such as whether people with mental disorders can be true Christians or not. By the way there’s such a point of view declaring that Christians can’t suffer from mental disorders at all. As for me I consider this statement to be rather funny. Are Christians supernatural creatures free of any temptations, shortcomings and diseases? We all know that Christ is able to cure us of any disease both mental and physical ones. So it seems to me everybody has the right to get help from him. But as I have mentioned above there’s a problem called the absence of mental disorders in relation to Christians of course. So we should develop a certain attitude to such people. Otherwise the reputation of our belief might be spoilt considerably.

It goes without saying that our salvation from all sins is a petty good thing but at the same time our existence in bodies is quite the opposite thing to my great regret. I just want to say that people with mental disorders shouldn’t be considered to be wrong creatures. Perhaps they haven’t done anything bad but at the same time they have to suffer not from their own sins but from other “true” Christians’ attitude to them. So from my point of view all Christians should consider mental disorders to be similar to physical ones.

For instance my closer friend was diagnosed with such an unpleasant thing as bio polar disorder about ten years ago. It goes without saying that for the first time he wasn’t perceived as a true Christian by others. But at the same time nobody could blame him for the lack of faith. In other words he managed to defend his rights to be a true Christian. As for me I’m glad for him. Furthermore he coped with his mental disorder and now he’s a normal person. So if you have such problems you shouldn’t hide away because you haven’t an additional guilt in this case. Just stay with God.
